You may have noticed by now that the new ordinance banning single-use plastic bags at checkout is already in effect in West Hollywood. At the larger stores near Melrose Village in the City of West Hollywood – Best Buy, Trader Joe’s, Target, Smart + Final, Whole Foods and others – this started last Wednesday. So for these stores, you have to bring your own bags or pay 10¢ for each paper bag that the store provides. Smaller stores in WeHo will have six more months to put the ban into practice.
There might be some confusion with this because this is a West Hollywood ordinance and is not in effect in the City of Los Angeles. So stores in L.A. – even the in the same chain – do not have to follow these rules. For example, Trader Joe’s at Poinsettia and Santa Monica Blvd. has to follow the rules, while the two Trader Joe’s stores on Third St. do not.
So get your reusable bags ready and, for more details, see our post from last month.
