Last December we reported the sad news that beloved Italian restaurant Angeli Caffe was closing after 28 years in the same location on Melrose Avenue.
It did not take long for the Thom Mayne-designed space to get filled.
Eater is reporting that new restaurant Itri will open in August. According to the blog’s article, “LA’s 12 Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings in 2012”:
The second forthcoming restaurant from Casey Lane (The Tasting Kitchen, The Parish) is Itri, which is taking over the former Angeli Caffe space on Melrose (is it a coincidence that Lane is taking over two former cafes named for angels?). At Itri, Lane is going for casual Italian. It will be a tough spot to fill for fans of Evan Kleiman’s beloved Angeli. Eater Projected Opening Date: August 15.
Lane told the Los Angeles Times that he will have an interesting spin on Italian food, saying, “I have plans to offer rotisserie octopus at the new pasta space we’re planning to open later this year on Melrose [Itri], and I can’t get it off my mind.”
By the looks of it, renovations to the space are under way.
