Big Concert Saturday Night at Fairfax High

We received this note from the amazing Joyce Kleifield, the tireless Development Director of Fairfax High School:

We are holding a free concert on Saturday, October 15th, paying tribute to Fairfax alum Jerry Leiber – who recently passed away. We are very excited to offer this to our community and to honor a true legend in music history, and are equally excited to welcome Mr. Leiber’s music partner, Mike Stoller, who will be joining us to honor Jerry. In keeping with the era we will be celebrating, food will be available for purchase from Pink’s Hot Dogs and from the Canter’s Restaurant food truck (owners of both establishments are Fairfax High School alumni as well!).  We hope you will join us for this fun evening.

The concert will take place in the outdoor amphitheatre in the newly landscaped quad on the east side of the Auditorium.  Gates will open at 6:00 p.m., with music set to begin at 7:00 p.m.  Admission to the concert is free, with a suggested donation of $20 to support the school’s performing arts programs.  Free parking is available in the school parking lot at the corner of Fairfax Avenue and Melrose Avenue.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller collaborated on some of the most memorable rock ‘n’ roll and R&B tunes ever written, including such hits as Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock, Stand By Me, Love Potion #9, Kansas City, Yakety-Yak, Poison Ivy, and On Broadway.  Leiber, an alumnus of Fairfax High School (Class of ’51), passed away August 22 of this year.

Featured talent will include the Fairfax High School Band, and the newly established “Lions’ Glee.”  They will be joined by accomplished musical alumni and surprise guests.
