New Trader Joe’s to be built at 3rd and Fairfax

We have a scoop – a new Trader Joe’s will be built at 3rd and Fairfax, across the street from the Farmers Market.  It will be part of a new shopping complex built by A.F. Gilmore Company, which owns the Farmers Market, on land that until now has been used as a Christmas tree lot, plant nursery, and a few small stores.

A representative of A.F. Gilmore Company announced this new store at last night’s Mid City West Community Council meeting, in response to concerns about operations of the Trader Joe’s store at 3rd and La Brea, which has been criticized for causing significant problems for its residential neighbors, including traffic backups and late-evening noise from truck deliveries.  The Mid City West board voted to oppose allowing Trader Joe’s to expand their hours of operations at the La Brea store, due to these problems.

The Gilmore rep said that the new store at 3rd and Fairfax should ease pressure on the existing La Brea store.

Trader Joe’s is an on expansion kick in our area.  In addition to the planned store at 3rd and Fairfax, the gourmet grocer will also open a store in the new Caruso luxury apartment building at the intersection of La Cienega, San Vicente, and Burton Way (just north of the SLS Hotel and the La Cienega restaurant row).

Also, the Trader Joe’s at Santa Monica Boulevard and Fuller will be completely rebuilt as part of the new Casden luxury condo/retail development called Movietown Plaza, which will break ground shortly.  Plans are for that store to stay open during construction of its new space, and then immediately move into the new space while construction continues around it.  (Neat trick, and one that caused local TJ fans to breath a sigh of relief.)

A Trader Joe’s opened a few months ago in the new W Hotel/condo/apartment complex at Hollywood and Vine.  And a Trader Joe’s store opened a bit over a year ago in the 8000 Sunset complex (at Crescent Heights), along with the CB2 store that replaced the beloved but ill-fated Virgin Megastore.

So, by our count, in a couple years time, our Melrose Village neighborhood will have seven Trader Joe’s stores within a two-mile radius.

We will make sure to mention that to our New York friends, who describe standing in line for a half hour just to enter one of the three Trader Joe’s stores in all of Manhattan.  And by the way, did you know that we have better weather here?

Is it final? TJ has tried to get the location for at least a year.

  2. The property owner (Gilmore Co.) is announcing that Trader Joe’s will be there – that sounds pretty final.

AS much as I like the convenience of having it oh, so MUCH closer than the 3rdSt & LaBrea (+6 others) location, the real test will be how they design the parking for it. Maybe Gillmore will get more creative on this one and make it a drive-through.

    • Sorry, no drive-through planned. The plans call for a Trader Joe’s and a restaurant to go into a building to be constructed at the corner of Fairfax Avenue and 3rd Street, with a surface parking lot fronting 3rd Street to the west of the new building, and the parking lot entrance and exit on 3rd Street.
